How to Turn Black Friday Customers Into Repeat Customers
Treat your Black Friday Cyber Monday buyers as their own group, thank them like a person, help them get value from what they bought, and time the next nudge to when they will actually need you again. Skip the automatic "10% off your next order" email the day after delivery. It teaches new customers that your price is always negotiable.
Why do BFCM customers so often buy once?
Many of them found you through the deal, not the brand. They don't know you yet, and the next time they hear from you is often another discount, which confirms the deal was the point.
Store owners talk about this a lot. In a Shopify Community thread this September, several merchants gave the same advice: don't send a generic discount right after delivery, start with how to use the product, and save the reorder prompt for when the customer is running low (Shopify Community). One merchant summed up the risk of stacking discounts: "You get volume, then a quiet January."
Step 1: Tag the BFCM cohort before the sale starts
Decide now how you will find these customers later. In Shopify you can build customer segments from order history (Shopify Help), or tag BFCM orders as they come in.
Then split the group, because one follow-up does not fit everyone:
- By product. Something people reorder (coffee, skincare, pet food) needs a refill reminder. Something they buy once (a bag, a lamp) needs a related product or a reason to come back.
- Stock-up orders. Someone who bought three bags of coffee doesn't need a "running low?" email at the same time as someone who bought one. A merchant in the same thread made exactly this point.
- Gift orders. The buyer may never use the product, so a usage tips email is odd. Thank them and leave it there until next season.
Step 2: Make the first thank-you feel human
The order confirmation is the one message everyone reads. Most of them sound the same. A short, real thank-you from the founder or the person who packs the orders is what makes a first-time buyer remember your name.
Keep it under 30 seconds: who you are, thanks for trying us, one tip for getting the most out of what they bought.
Step 3: Teach before you sell
A few days after delivery, send something useful: how to use it, how to care for it, what most people get wrong in week one. No coupon. This is the message that turns "I got a deal" into "I like this brand."
Step 4: Time the next ask to real life
For products people use up, merchants in the thread suggested a reminder roughly 21 to 30 days after fulfillment, adjusted to how long the product actually lasts. Your own order history is the best guide: look at how long repeat customers usually take to order again.
For one-time products, wait for an occasion: a care product, an accessory, or the next gift season.
A worked example
Here is an illustrative plan for a small coffee roaster:
- Order day: voice thank-you from the roaster on the thank-you page
- When it ships: a text with a 20-second note about the beans they ordered
- 3 days after delivery: brewing tips email, no discount
- About 3 weeks later (single-bag orders): "running low?" reminder with a subscribe option
- Gift orders: no follow-up until next season
Where DropVoice fits
We built DropVoice for Step 2. You record a short voice note in your browser and it plays on your product page, at checkout, on the thank-you page and on the customer account and order pages. On the Winning plan and up, you can also text a voice note when the order ships, opening on a listen page with your logo and colors.
DropVoice doesn't send email flows, so Steps 3 and 4 live in Shopify Email, Shopify Flow or the email tool you already use.
DropVoice also has listen-to-unlock rewards, which issue a discount code when someone listens to your note. That is a discount, so for BFCM buyers we would keep it for a later, smaller moment rather than the thank-you.
Plans start at $10/month for two voice notes. Winning is $25/month with delivery SMS at $0.01 per message, and Major Success is $55/month with unlimited notes and SMS. Every plan has a 15-day free trial.

Checklist: BFCM follow-up plan
- Decide how you will tag or segment BFCM orders
- Split by product type, stock-up orders and gifts
- Record a short, real thank-you for the thank-you page
- Write one "how to use it" email with no coupon
- Set reorder timing from your own repeat-order data
- Save any discount for later, and keep it small
FAQ
Should I give BFCM customers a discount on their second order?
You can, but not by default and not right away. A useful first follow-up and a well-timed reminder usually do more for the relationship than a coupon the day after delivery.
When should the reorder reminder go out?
For products people use up, merchants in the Shopify Community thread suggested about 21 to 30 days after fulfillment. Treat that as a starting point, then check your own repeat-order data to see how long customers really take to buy again.
What should I do about gift orders?
Thank the buyer and stop there. They may never use the product, so a usage tips email or a reorder reminder is odd. Wait until next gift season.
Does DropVoice send the follow-up emails?
No. DropVoice handles the voice thank-you and, on the Winning plan and up, a shipping text. The how-to email and the reorder reminder live in Shopify Email, Shopify Flow or the email tool you already use.
